Waimea has all the conveniences and historic sites of a busy resort destination, but without the “busy” part. Once the leading village and port of entry for Kauai, Waimea offers restaurants, shops and markets, banks, churches, schools, movies at the restored Waimea Theatre, a medical center, hosptial and emergency care, and historic sites, all within walking distance.The Captain Cook Monument, is located in Waimea at Hofgaard Park, and commemorates where British Captain James Cook first landed in Hawaii in 1778.
Waimea is also the gateway to several state parks and nature preserves including: the incredible Waimea Canyon - which is about 10 miles long, has over 45 miles of hiking trails within the canyon for visitors to explore and is often described as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific; the forests of Kokee; the hanging cliffs of the Napali Coast; and the sand dunes of Polihale.
Russian Fort Elizabeth State Historical Park
On east bank of Waimea rivermouth off Kaumualii Highway (Highway 50). The boulder-built fort stands as a reminder of Russia’s short-lived adventure (1815-1817) in the Hawaiian Islands. Self-guided walk.
Waimea Canyon State Park is ten miles long and about 3,600 feet deep. Waimea Canyon was described by Mark Twain as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” One memorable image of the canyon that will remain with you, beyond the incredible scale of it all, is the rainbow of colors that dance along the canyon peaks down into the deep, colorful gorge. From the last two lookouts there are spectacular views into Kalalau Valley, one of the most beautiful sights on the island. You can also enjoy a viewpoint of Niihau Island, wildland picnicking and a short nature trail. An adjacent forest reserve offers a long, strenuous hike into and out of the canyon. There is seasonal trout fishing and seasonal pig and goat hunting nearby.
Kokee State Park commandes views of the lush, amphitheater-headed Kalalau Valley from 4000 feet elevation. Wildland picnicking, tent camping, trailer camping and lodging. Hiking in native rain forest and along rim of Waimea Canyon; additional trails in neighboring forest reserves. Excellent area for study of native plants, forest birds and insects. Seasonal plum picking and trout fishing. Pig hunting in public hunting area.
Polihale State Park is well worth the trip. Surrounded by etched cliffs, blue sky, and crashing waves, you could spend a whole day just basking in the beauty. Here you’ll find Hawaii’s longest stretch of golden beach – a sunbather’s paradise. Just to the north of the park is the sacred Polihale heiau from which the Hawaiians believed the souls of the dead departed the island into the setting sun.
