Welcome to Hanalei

Hanalei is located on Kauai’s North Shore. It is the name of a district, bay, beach, town, river, valley and lookout. The valley of Hanalei is surrounded by majestic mountains. A mile wide and 6 miles long, it’s the home of the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge.

The Hanalei land district (zone 5) includes the communities of Haena, Hanalei, Princeville, and Kilauea.

Hanalei Bay is famous for its spectacular beauty. Its white sand beach is a half-mile long, beginning at the base of a sheer cliff on one side and narrowing into a rocky point on the other.

The little picturesque community of Hanalei town, stretching for only several hundred yards along Highway 56 is little more than a village, really. You can almost pass right by it before you realize you’ve even arrived. The main center of activity lies at a point where two shopping areas face each other across the highway.
On the mauka (mountain) side, the assorted buildings of the Hanalei Center include a converted school, several restaurants, a surf shop, a snack bar as well as a handful of upmarket clothing and gift stores. The second shopping area is on the ocean(makai) side of the highway and is larger than it first looks. In addition to a couple of outdoor adventure and equipment-rental companies, it offers another surf shop, a grocery store, and several additional restaurants.
