Welcome to Haena

Haena sits on the northern coast of Kauai near Tunnels Beach and Wainiha Bay. This is a very interesting area located along a 38-mile stretch of Highway 56, where legend has it that the sea caves were formed by the fire goddess Pele's search for a new home.

Haeana State Park & Caves is a scenic wildland park.

Leaving Hanalei, Hwy 56 continues further to the north-western part of the Na Pali Coast. Within Haena State Park, to the left of the roadside, are several caves, including Dry Cave near the coast and Waikanaloa Wet Cave and Waikopaloe Wet Cave which are reached by climbing about 427ft/130m up the hill from the road.

Haena is the end of road. This is also where you will find the trailhead for the only land route to the panoramic vistas of the Na Pali Coast.

Haena State Park is a great place for swimming in the summer time and surfing in the winter. You will find restrooms and showers, and mobile snack vans located on the beach. Points of interest in the Haena area include the Waioli Mission House. This mission was built in 1837 of coral limestone blocks and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Waioli Mission Hall and the picturesque Waioli Huiia Church are also nearby.

There are five botanical gardens located near Haena, and beautiful Limahula Garden was recently named National Botanical Garden of the Year. Visitors can enjoy 17 acres of gardens and rain forest, and rare native plants.

Kalalau Trail is a hiking trail made and used by early Hawaiians. This trail is strenuous and tiring, even for experienced hikers. The trail begins at Haena State Park in the north and ends after 11 miles in Kalalau Valley. However, hiking the first 2 miles to Hanakapiai Beach is easier, and will give you a good impression of the landscape and vegetation.

Haena has an exclusive residential area in which grand estates with expansive grounds and magnificent ocean and “Bali Hai” views have been built and sold upwards of $20 million.

You will find yourself entranced with this tropical paradise found along Kauai?s north shore.
